About the Tip & Gratuity Calculator
Industry-standard driver gratuity sits at 15–20% of the rental rate, but the better question is whether the quote you received already includes it. Many operators advertise an attractive hourly rate and then add 18–20% gratuity at the end of the rental as a separate line item. Bus2Ride bundles gratuity into the all-inclusive quote so the price you see is the price you pay. This calculator exists for general industry reference and for renters comparing other operators' pricing.
When using the calculator on a non-Bus2Ride quote, base the tip on the pre-tax rental amount, not the total including taxes and fees. Exceptional service — driver helped manage stops, navigated traffic creatively, handled an unexpected venue change — warrants the upper end of 20%. Average service tips at 15%; below-average service is grounds for contacting the operator after the event, not for tipping less and hoping the company notices on its own.
Cash tips at the end of the night, where appropriate, are still appreciated by drivers even when gratuity is bundled into the rental rate. A $20–$40 cash tip handed to a driver who genuinely improved the night is meaningful and remembered. Skip the cash bonus if gratuity was already pooled and the experience was unremarkable — over-tipping out of guilt or confusion is not required, and reasonable operators do not expect it.
